The luxury yacht Almax, delivered by the Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo in 2024, sets a new standard in luxury, performance and sustainability in the world of yachting. The 164-foot vessel is equipped with advanced technology that not only ensures strong performance, but also demonstrates the shipyard’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Performance and Range
The Almax is powered by two MAN D2862-LE489 engines, producing 1066 kW (1450 PS) at 2100 RPM, allowing her to reach speeds of up to 16 knots and cruise at around 12.5 knots. For longer voyages, the vessel can maintain an economical speed of 11 knots, offering an impressive range of up to 4,000 nautical miles, thanks to her 55,000 liter fuel capacity. This makes the Almax ideal for long voyages without frequent refueling stops.
Sustainability Features
What sets Almax apart are its innovative sustainability features. The vessel is equipped with the Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system, developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy. This revolutionary technology converts green methanol into hydrogen, which is then converted into electricity, allowing the vessel to power cabin systems such as air conditioning and lighting, without emissions while at anchor. The fuel cell system produces up to 100 kW of electricity, allowing the vessel to operate for 85% of its operating time carbon-free.
The choice of green methanol as a fuel stems from the need for safety and practicality. Hydrogen, in gaseous form, is highly explosive, while to transport it in liquid form it must be cooled to a temperature of -253°C or compressed to very high pressure, requiring the use of large storage tanks. In contrast, methanol is easy and safe to handle, making it ideal for powering the boat's cabin systems. Massimo Perotti, President and CEO of Sanlorenzo, explains that this solution allows the 100 kW generator to cover 85% of the cabin load without requiring hydrogen storage on board.
Innovative Design: Hidden Engine System and Spacious Interiors
The innovative design of the Almax includes Sanlorenzo’s patented Hidden Engine Room (HER) system, which reverses the traditional layout of boats. By distributing the propulsion system horizontally along the technical deck, the boat maximizes the available space, offering larger spaces for passengers on the lower deck. This innovative layout also allows the integration of the fuel cell system without affecting the interior space, keeping the boat under 500 ton
The interior of the vessel, designed by Zuccon International Project and complemented by the contemporary aesthetics of Piero Lissoni, reflects the unique deck system while maintaining the elegance for which Sanlorenzo is known. The interior extends over five sloping decks, with spacious volumes and open connections to the exterior, creating open, uninterrupted spaces. The saloon and dining room are structured on two levels, with classic elements redesigned in a contemporary way, such as coffered ceilings and dark wood paneling, offering an aristocratic atmosphere.
Ocean Lounge and Beach Club
Almax offers an extensive range of amenities for ultimate luxury. The spacious Ocean Lounge and Beach Club with pool are ideal for entertaining, while the boat accommodates up to 10 guests in luxurious surroundings. Every aspect of the design, from the layout to the materials used, reflects a commitment to comfort, innovation and contemporary luxury.
Vision for the Future
Almax is not just a yacht, but a statement of Sanlorenzo's vision for the future of yachting. As part of the 'Road to 2030' initiative, Almax demonstrates the potential for building zero-carbon boats by the end of the decade. Combining innovative design, sustainable technologies and luxurious living, Almax sets a new benchmark for the yachting industry, combining elegance with eco-consciousness and performance.
